India needs to clearly outline its endgame in Kashmir beyond petty politicking within the ambit of a grand strategy, harmonising Kashmir politics and governance with a firm control on the terror emanating out of Pakistan.
Why doesn’t the government heed the points raised by security experts? Much of what experts recommend is pretty commonsensical; at any rate, it is not rocket science. More CCTVs; better trained, equipped, and motivated cops; police reforms—one need not be a K.P.S. Gill to know the importance of all these things. A shortsighted approach vacillating between appeasement and coercion has not yielded the desired results. In the prevailing environment, smaller neighbours are not averse to India playing a lead role as long as their interests are well served.
For the anger to subside on the streets, the security forces will have to be more than transparent in conducting their operations. While this is a challenging and uphill task considering the dimensions and extent of their involvement we are sure this incident would serve to remind them that heart is the only way forward.
All seems to be quiet in Kashmir for the time being and there are political voices emanating from the Home Ministry that a political solution to the imboglio in Kashmir is in sight.
